We decided to go out and sample the live music scene in Kyoto. Like most live music in Japan, it was on the 3rd floor of what looks on the outside like an office block (most pubs and restaurants are in buildings like these) and is on sharp at 6.30pm. In Japan, if something is scheduled to start at 6.30 then at 6.29 everyone is ready and waiting for the curtain to rise. Sure enough, this was the same. The cover charge of 500 yen included a free drink.
In between songs, the lead singer would banter with the audience. He was very charismatic and the audience were loving him. Mind you, they were all about 18 (if that). He spotted us at the back of the gig and welcomed us. It was quite surreal. What was weirder was that he came up to us after the gig. I'm going to do a separate post on this later but it always amazes me when Japanese people want to talk to us. There's a real curiosity, especially with the younger crowd.
It was a pop-punk band called Nechikko35. Good fun.
